We always love to discover new and interesting traditions from around the world. We don’t get the chance to feature all of them, but one stood out as something that our family might truly appreciate this year.

Given that we have infant twins, we don’t get a ton of quiet and rest in our lives. And with our “25 Dates of Christmas” taking a lot of time and energy to pull off, that reality can feel all the more common during the Christmas season. So, at the start of this Christmas season, we intentionally participated in one of the most hygge and relaxing Christmas traditions that there is…. Jolabokaflod. For those that don’t know Icelandic, that mean’s “Icelandic Book Flood”. And for those who still don’t know what that means. then just keep reading….

Jolabokaflod is a tradition started in Iceland around the era of WWII when traditional gifts were hard to find to import to the island nation. As a result, books became the most popular gift and the tradition has stuck. Now, the start of the Christmas season is the release of the book catalog with all the new titles for the season. And Christmas is often concluded with everyone grabbing their book and a cup of cocoa and settling in for the night. That sounded perfect to us new parents and so we made quick batch of cookies, stirred up some cocoa, and settled in under some blankets to enjoy some festive reading.
