One of Ben’s favorite themes to feature is “Weird Christmas Traditions & Characters from Around the World”. And the one for this year is really something! The Icelandic Yule Lads are a group of thirteen troll brothers who emerge from the hills of Iceland in the thirteen days leading into Christmas and play tricks, steal food left lying around, and create overall havoc.

They each have their own specialty ranging from Sausage Snatcher to Skyr Gobbler to Door Slammer to Candle Stealer to Pot Licker. So, to celebrate alongside Iceland on December 12th as the first of the Yule Lads arrives, our family made a feast of leftover foods, played games including sausage snatching and candle sniffing, and had an overall jolly evening trying to feature each of the dozen Yule Lads in their own special way.
