Gingersnaps & Winter Naps
Looking ahead at the many themed days we've planned to celebrate over the years (and perhaps even decades!), we know that some are perfectly timed for certain stages of life. Today is one of those days—it’s “Gingersnaps and Winter Naps”! As part of our “Rhyming Hygge” collection, this theme is all about unwinding and cozying up as a family. With our twins now three years old, we're aware that these precious nap times won't be part of our routine for much longer, making this year the perfect moment to embrace the theme.
To pair with our “Winter Naps,” we chose “Gingersnaps”! These cookies have a rich history, originally brought over by European immigrants and closely related to the German cookie lebkuchen. The name "gingersnap" itself stems from the German word "snappen," meaning "to seize quickly," reflecting their quick baking process. Made with butter, molasses, and flour, gingersnaps were popular during Colonial times and have now become a beloved Christmas treat.
Our day’s festivities revolved around all things “Snap” and “Ginger.” We enjoyed holiday Rice Krispies (a nod to the ginger-haired elf “Snap” of Snap, Crackle, Pop), indulged in a gingerbread latte, savored gingersnap cookies, and sipped on a tasty gingersnap cocktail. For activities, we got creative with “snappy” rubber bands in a Christmas tree rainbow loom craft and played “Snap Judgment: Christmas Edition,” a lively game adding a festive twist to decision-making. And of course, we couldn’t resist watching one of the most iconic “Ginger Snaps” of all time—Catherine O’Hara’s memorable “Kevin!” scream from “Home Alone 2.”
Amidst the fun, we made sure to take breaks for actual rest and incorporated Winter Naps. We read “Grumpy Badger’s Christmas,” a delightful tale about a badger attempting to hibernate over Christmas, before settling down for our very own afternoon naps with some brand new Christmas jammies. And before the kids’ bedtime, we read “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (better known as “Twas the Night Before Christmas” to include the reference to “And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap”. And after bedtime, us adults played a themed version of Tiddlywinks called “40 Winks,” using festive red and green chips while sipping on a Long Winter’s Nap cocktail.
It was a day filled with laughter, relaxation, and cherished moments—a perfect blend of “Gingersnaps and Winter Naps” that we’ll remember fondly as our twins grow older and these tranquil days become treasured memories.
